Clear questions for a ceremony that feels like you.
Your wedding ceremony might be simple, detailed, traditional, or entirely your own. Whatever you’re picturing, the person leading it matters. A good officiant should listen to what you want, explain what’s involved, and help you feel prepared—not leave you guessing.
I’m Carrie, the owner of Luckey Signature Services and an ordained wedding officiant. I believe every couple deserves clear information and a ceremony that reflects their preferences. These are seven questions I’d encourage you to ask any officiant, including me, before deciding who’s right for your day.
1. Are you available for our date, time, and location?
Start with the essentials: your preferred date, approximate time, and ceremony location. Then ask whether the officiant can travel there, whether there may be an additional travel charge, and how much time the ceremony requires. If you’re planning an outdoor gathering, a home ceremony, or a small elopement, mention it early so you can discuss what is practical.
2. Are you authorized to perform the kind of ceremony we want?
A legal wedding, vow renewal, and symbolic commitment ceremony are not interchangeable. Ask what kind of ceremony the officiant can provide and, for a legal marriage, whether they are authorized to solemnize marriages in your state. In Oklahoma, qualifying clergy and certain judicial officials may solemnize marriages under state law; being a notary public alone does not grant that authority. If a legal requirement is unclear, the court clerk issuing your marriage license can explain its current instructions.
3. How much can we personalize our ceremony?
Ask whether you can choose the tone, share your story, include readings or meaningful traditions, and review the ceremony wording beforehand. Also ask how many revisions are included. A short ceremony can be every bit as meaningful as a longer one; what matters is that the words and experience feel comfortable and true to you.
4. What’s included in the price?
Two officiants can quote different prices because their services include different things. Ask what’s covered: a planning conversation, ceremony script, revisions, rehearsal guidance, travel, and paperwork connected to the ceremony. Find out when payments are due and what happens if plans change. I recommend getting the agreed services and terms in writing so everyone knows what to expect.
5. What does the planning process look like?
What happens between booking and the ceremony? Will you complete a questionnaire, have a conversation about your preferences, or review a script? When should you share names, readings, or special requests? Even for a small ceremony, knowing the next step and when to expect updates makes planning easier.
6. Do you lead rehearsals or provide other ceremony support?
Rehearsal direction may include the entrance order, where people stand, and simple ceremony cues. That can be helpful, but it is not the same as coordinating the entire wedding day. Ask whether a rehearsal is available, what it includes, and who is responsible for venue setup, vendors, guests, and the broader schedule. At LSS, my optional rehearsal support is limited to the ceremony itself—not full wedding coordination.
7. Who handles the marriage license, witnesses, and paperwork?
For a legal marriage, ask who is responsible for obtaining the license before the ceremony, what information the officiant needs, who must be present, and how the completed marriage certificate and license will be handled afterward. Oklahoma law requires at least two adult, competent witnesses at a legal marriage ceremony. The completed paperwork is time-sensitive, so check the actual license and instructions from the issuing court clerk rather than relying on a general wedding checklist.
The right officiant should help you feel prepared
You don’t have to have every detail figured out to start asking questions. An initial conversation should help you understand your options, what the officiant can handle, and what decisions still belong to you. You should come away feeling clearer—not more overwhelmed.
At Luckey Signature Services, I offer simple legal ceremonies, personalized officiation, and limited pre-ceremony planning support. I don’t provide full wedding planning, setup, or wedding-day coordination, and I’ll be clear about what is—and isn’t—included. If you’re planning a ceremony in Oklahoma, you’re welcome to reach out with your preferred date, general location, and the kind of moment you have in mind. I’ll help you understand whether my services are a good fit.
